Here in Colorado we have been experiencing unseasonably frigid
weather and snow. It is snowing and
below zero today. This is projected to
continue through Wednesday. Tulips,
lilies, daffodils and other spring flowers have frozen. They are brown and withered. I have been asked if they will push new
growth. I simply don’t know that. I haven’t seen this before. They are bulb plants and I am reasonably sure
that they will not die. However, we may
have lost our blooms for this season.
Peony and clematis which have broken ground prematurely due
to unseasonable warmth earlier this year are also descanted and brown. If these are well established, I suspect they
will push new growth. We will see.
I think it is best not to prune or first-feed roses right
now. I will be waiting until Mother’s
Day when hopefully the cold will be gone.
This will put me about two weeks behind in terms of my routine schedule,
but I think it worth it not to stress the plant.
